Little Lever v Sutton St Helens - Quarter final of the Beardsley Cup
LLCC stumble into the Semi-Finals after chaotic win!
An undisputed toss meant that both teams got what they wanted in the first innings with LLCC wanting to bowl first.
Last weeks hero John Mooney opened the bowling with a short spell of 0.1 overs. Mooney suffered an injury whilst bowling the first ball of the innings. Jack Hamlett was chucked the ball to get us underway. Sutton made a very comfortable start to the game and saw themselves lose their first wicket in the 8th over at 61-1. Sutton carried on with ease to find themselves at 100-1. Wickets then started to fall for LLCC including a Ryan Worden hat-trick which saw a mini collapse for the visitors who were then 125-7. A strong end to the Sutton innings meant that the visitors had posted a final score of 227 all out after 39 overs.
With rain due and a high run rate to keep up with, the 10 man LLCC batting order was carefully chosen to give us the best chance in case DLS was required. Tim Taylor and Benjamin Blinkhorn-Street opened the batting for the village. The first wicket of our innings fell in the 8th over which saw Tim Taylor (19) depart leaving us 41-1. Benjamin Blinkhorn-Street was next to fall after a very enjoyable 41, 70-2. Ryan Worden chipped in with 16 and Spewy Partington 15. It was safe to say the visitors where well on top at 107-6. Jack Hamlett and Cal Hill started to find a way back into the game for LLCC. The 2 young lads took us from 107-6 to Jack Hamlett’s exit at 161-7. Jack Hamlett making 28. With our 8th wicket falling a couple of balls later we stood at 166-8 with only one man to bat. After just one ball the 28th over was finished… and so was the game. The heavens opened and the thunder started. Unfortunately for LLCC’s Callum Hill (31*) and Owen Ward-Scott, they were denied the chance to win the game in fanatic style, instead it would now go down to DLS run rate. As mentioned before it was something that we predicted would happen hence the decisions that were made.
Suttons run rate- 5.82
LLCC’s run rate- 5.92
With our run rate being 0.10 higher than Sutton’s it will now be LLCC contesting in the semi final. Another enjoyable game, against a very good set of lads. As frustrating as it was for Sutton to lose in these circumstances, they were gracious in the situation and wished us the best of luck.
